Wedding inspiration: Wedding Music

Find your perfect song

Wedding music

The music you select for your wedding reception can have a huge impact on the mood and tone of the event. The song you choose for your first dance is even more important as you really want your first dance to be one you remember with happiness for the rest of your life.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

Originally a folk song written by Ewan MacColl (father of Kirsty) and Peggy Seeger, who later became his first wife. Popularised by Flack who included it on her 1969 album First Take and became a hit after it featured in the Clint Eastwood film Play Misty For Me. The fact that the film is about a DJ who becomes the target of a deranged fan hasn't stopped it becoming a firm favourite for weddings.

Alternative: Tonight I Celebrate My Love by Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson.

Nobody Does it Better Carly Simon

Nobody does it better; Makes me feel sad for the rest; Nobody does it half as good as you; Baby, you're the best

Guess what? Another film song, in this case a Bond theme for the 1977 flick The Spy Who Loved Me. A classic 007 theme and a great first dance song just be careful when you ask the DJ for that one by Carly Simon he might end up playing You're So Vain...

Thank You - Led Zeppelin

One of several rock classics in our list, this one comes from the bands second album (cunningly titled Led Zeppelin II). While many of Led Zeps songs are directed to women, Thank You is a little more romantic and delicate than the likes of Whole Lotta Love and The Lemon Song...

From its opening lines If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you; If the mountains should crumble to the sea, there would still be you and me, this builds up to a great climax when everyone else can spill onto the dancefloor. Then you can put on Whole Lotta Love...

Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston

Some might say this was a cheesy choice (see also You're Beautiful, Don't Wanna Miss A Thing etc), but then if you cant be a little cheesy with a first dance song, when can you be? Originally recorded by George Benson in 1977, Whitney included it on her eponymous debut album and it gave her a number 8 UK hit in April 1986.

Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

First appeared on their 1991 Black Album, this was written by frontman James Hetfield for a former girlfriend. Whilst given a mixed reaction by die-hard Metallica fans, this is another rock favourite for weddings; if you want to liven things up a little afterwards, follow it with the singles B-side Enter Sandman.

You're Beautiful - James Blunt

Written after seeing a former girlfriend with her new man, although the subject matter is somewhat miserable (and the video, in which he strips and jumps off a cliff into icy waters), Blunts song was a smash hit, selling over 600,000 copies in the UK alone. It's one of those Marmite tunes, however: you either love it or hate it. Rolling Stone magazine listed it at number 7 in their Top 10 Most Annoying Songs, so don't be surprised if it gets a mixed reaction at the wedding.

Don't Wanna Miss A Thing - Aerosmith

Another slab of soft rock cheese and another from a movie soundtrack. Written by Diane Warren for the sci-fi film Armageddon (which starred Steve Tylers daughter Liv), this karaoke favourite reached number four in 1998.

Whiter Shade of Pale - Procul Harum

Number one from 1967, its one of the most performed songs ever with an estimated 800 recorded cover versions. With its Hammond organ line inspired by Bach and surreal lyrics (we skipped the light fandango; one of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast), this is a Sixties classic and a perfect slow number for the bride and groom.

You & Me Song - The Wannadies

Another leftfield choice, this is the biggest hit to date for the alternative rockers from Sweden. Originally released in 1994, it wasnt until two years later that it hit the Top 20, reaching number 18 in April 1996. Featured on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmanns film, William Shakespeares Romeo + Juliet.
